Mariam Sanda appeals death sentence

Subsequent to her conviction by an FCT High Court over the alleged murdering her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, Mariam Sanda has wrote the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, requesting the court to set aside the judgement and discharge her.

Mariam , who was sentenced to death by hanging by Justice Yusuf Halilu on Jan. 27, according to him said the trial judge “was tainted by bias and prejudices.”

From her statement, this led to the denial of her right to fair hearing and her consequent conviction based on circumstantial evidence despite the reasonable doubt that was created by evidence of witnesses, lack of confessional statement, absence of murder weapon, lack of corroboration of evidence by two or more witnesses and lack of autopsy report to determine the true cause of her husband’s death.

60 year-old-man Alexander Madu is now in police net in Imo for allegedly defiling a minor Ijeoma Agu in Umuoziri Inyishi in the Ikeduru local government area of the state. The victim, who was said to have lost her mother early this year, is a relation of the wife of the suspect. The nine-year-old Ijeoma was said to have been taken to her aunt by her father, Chijioke Agu for proper care. Alexander Madu who was apprehended by the police and paraded before newsmen yesterday was said to have taken advantage of his wife’s absence in the house to defile the girl up to five times. CORONAVIRUS : GOV Fayemi Orders Screening of Passengers at Motor Parks

The  Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has directed medical experts to start the screening of passengers coming into Ekiti from border states to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the state. The governor has also set up a 40-man task force to work on the prevention of the spread of coronavirus in the state. The task force chaired by Fayemi, has other stakeholders drawn from medical, religious and traditional institutions and civil society organisations, among others. The governor said an isolation centre where victims can be quarantined has been provided at the state specialist hospital that can easily handle any emerging case of the infection in the state. Fayemi gave the revelation at a press conference on coronavirus infection held in Ado Ekiti, on Monday.
